Time Value of Money: Calculator Tricks (No Formulas!)

Time Value of Money: Calculator Tricks (No Formulas!)

Time Value of Money (TVM) is the most important chapter in the Maths paper because it’s used in every other finance subject later. But here’s the reality: the formulas are ugly, long, and easy to mess up.

If you aren't using your calculator like a pro, you’re wasting time. Here’s how to dominate TVM:

The Power of 'GT' (Grand Total)

Finding the Present Value of an Annuity? Don't use the massive formula. Just find the discount factor for one year ($1 div 1.10 =$), hit $[=]$ for each year, and then hit GT. Multiply by your installment amount. Done in 5 seconds. ⚡

Compound Interest Shortcuts

Instead of $P(1+i)^n$, just type the rate, hit $[+]$ $[+]$, and then $[=]$ the number of times you need. It’s faster and prevents manual errors.

Example: CI @ 10% for 3 years.
Type 1.1 -> X -> = (2 times). Result: 1.331.

The 'M+' Magic

When you have complex equations with different parts, store each part in M+ and M-. At the end, hit MRC to see the final result. No need to write down mid-step numbers on your rough sheet!

Remember

Your calculator is your best friend. In the exam, the one who presses the buttons faster and smarter wins. 🏆
